Paleo is not a "FAD" diet!!

Not just a Diet, a Lifestyle
Uriia Underhill, B.Sc

I quite often hear people jumping into Paleo and refer to it as a "fad" and while this may be true for many of the diets out now days, I want to stand firm in the fact that Paleo is not one of them!

Let me start of by saying that the term Paleo, is very limiting to what this lifestyle actually does. It is also very contradicting in the fact that we of course have so many more luxuries than what a "Caveman" would of had. It seems that most articles that involve talking about Paleo are quick to jump into the whole "well a caveman would not have really eaten a Paleo diet." Well no joke, Cavemen didn't sleep on memory foam beds either. Along with a LONG list of other perks we get to living in this time. Oh and we don't go around chomping on raw meat either.  So just to get that out of the way!

I really wish there was another name for the lifestyle. Not only because of the reasons mentioned before but on the fact that this lifestyle is not a fad, it is based on years of scientific research. There is a reason why a majority of Health conscience people choose to eat lean meats, vegetables, fruit, nuts, seeds and healthy fats.

A body needs something out of each of these foods groups! Now I'm not one to be very restrictive and I do indulge occasionally. The fact is that avoiding anything overly processed is beneficial for your body.

Most Dairy- overly processed
Wheat, Grains, Rice- overly processed

Not to mention the majority of people, upward to 75% are in fact lactose intolerant.
Why?
It has an abundance of unnecessary hormones
It is high in Saturated Fat
Calcium is not as important for bones as once thought- You need Vitamin D but of course the sun version is far more superior than the supplement.
It creates mucus inside the body, which cancer actually thrives on.
It spikes blood sugar.
We actually stop producing the enzyme to break down milks sugar after infancy.

Wheat is not what it used to be. The actual wheat plant has been genetically modified, which means now it is full of junk that back in biblical days was not present. I want to specify biblical because many people use well it says to eat bread. While this may be true back in a time of extreme famine, we are not lacking in food sources these days. Not to mention we have added so many other things to the product that our bodies do not even recognize it as a food at this point, if it ever did. I see Wheat, Grains and Rice as a "filler food" or even a caulk. Meant to fill up the space in your belly but not actually provide you with necessary vitamins and minerals, unless it's fortified which again hits the OVERLY PROCESSED spectrum.

It contains a Super Starch – amylopectin A that is super fattening.
It contains a form of Super Gluten that is super-inflammatory.
It contains forms of a Super Drug that is super-addictive and makes you crave and eat more.  (Hyman, M., 2013)

Eating One slice of bread  does to your blood sugar, what two teaspoons of pure sugar would. NOT GOOD!

So, Meat has necessary vitamins and minerals. It is researched that our body is able to break down and use things that can only be found in meat. If you have to overly supplement your eating habits with vitamins and minerals then something is missing from your diet. Also the fact that our teeth are actually designed to chew meat. Not solely meat, like say a dog but a variety of foods.

Vegetables and fruits again with necessary naturally occurring vitamins and minerals, etc.

Nuts, Seeds, and Healthy Fats provide lubrication throughout the body. Bind to unhealthy LDL and some cholesterol. Also provides your body with energy.

Each of those are staples in the "paleo" type lifestyle.

Oh another great thing is cutting out the stuff that your body doesn't recognize as food also means that really you can throw out the calories too. No counting here! When you eat the things you are supposed to eat, calories have no meaning. Go ahead and eat 6 cups of spinach after a Steak with mixed vegetables and  coconut oil. Its hard to even get close to a 2,000 calorie a day plan, when eating like that however your body will be FULL of the vitamins and minerals you need.

In a nut shell, Paleo (or the eat what is naturally put here for us to eat) "diet" is not a fad, it is scientifically proven to

stabilize blood sugar
eliminate many dietary caused illnesses (high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes, multiple sclerosis, just to name a few)
and improve overall well-being

So find another "fad" diet that does all those things... ehh, it won't happen!

Really it should be the "Health" diet because you can't hide these facts. This will definitely not fade over time or only result in short term success.

The Miracle Oil

Coconut oil

Uriia Underhill, B.Sc.

Plant derived tropical oils such as coconut oil do not go rancid and are highly stable.

Foods prepared with coconut oil remain fresher longer and are better for you

Hydrogenated oils contain health harming trans fats.

80% of all vegetable oil used in the United States today is made from Genetically Modified Soybeans.

Heart disease, cancer, infectious diseases, obesity, immune dysfunction and diabetes have been linked to the consumption of hydrogenated oil.

Before the tropical oil crisis a restaurant meal in 1982, which contained either coconut oil or some type of coconut oil contained only 2.4 grams of trans fatty acid.
Now the same meal cooked in vegetable oil contains nearly 19.2 grams.

Residents of Sri Lanka and people of the Pacific Islands, whose diet is coconut and coconut oil based has the lowest rate of heart disease in the world.

Coconut Oil is a Medium Chain Fatty Acid.
Coconut Oil does not raise blood sugar, it has even been reported to help maintain sugar cravings and reduce hypoglycemic symptoms.

Using Coconut oil helps the body obtain and absorb fat-soluble vitamins such as A, D, E, and K.

Replacing other oils and fats in your foods with Coconut Oil can actually help you lose weight.

Research has suggested that the Medium Chain Fatty Acids found in Coconut Oil can actually destroy bacteria and fungi.

Feeding animals Coconut Oil has expelled intestinal parasites.
It has also helped in the cases of lice, giardia, candida, viruses and germs.

Laboratory tests have shown that the Medium Chain Fatty Acids found in Coconut Oil have been effective in destroying the viruses that cause influenza, measles, herpes, mononucleosis, hepatitis C and AIDS.

Coconut Oil is also effective in kiling bacterias that can cause stomach ulcers, throat infections, pneumonia, sinusitis, rheumatic fever, earache, dental cavities, urinary tract infections, food posioning, meningitis, gonorrhea and toxic shock syndrome.

Coconut Oil has shown to help destroy yeast and fungi that can cause thrush, candida, ringworm as well as intestinal infections.

These same Medium Chain Fatty Acids are most predominantly found in mammals milk. That's right Coconut Oil is the closest fat found to mimic that found in breast milk.

Of course always look for organic products to receive the most healing properties.

Eat Your Vegetables!!

MORE Vegetables, PLEASE!
Uriia Underhill, B.Sc.

Funny thing is this would seem to be something that would put you in the right direction of health.  Now I'm beginning to wonder, what benefits we are actually receiving if we are unable to buy straight organic or grow our own?

I support vegetables and fruit! I know that in a better time these foods would be sole provider of many essential vitamins and nutrients needed to improve all aspects of health and wellness.

The problem is that now days, we could actually be doing more harm than good because of the amounts of pesticides present in our food supply.

I recently watched an episode of Dr. Oz that stated a conventional grown cucumber can have upward to 32 different pesticides used during its growth, which in turn results in that many being present inside the vegetable. Yeah, Yeah I know you can "just wash the outside." Or at least that is what "they" tell you. Now we all know a plant is grown from a root, which sucks from the ground and then distributes those toxins through out the product. Hmm seems to me no amount of washing is able to clean out the inside of a plant. Thus this horrible situation continues.

It is sad to me that now the "true medicine" for our bodies is tainted. Many people are unable to afford Organic produce and in that case unable to escape possible poisoning. I realize that there are two options to reduce this problem, grow your own or take back our produce. We can make a difference!!

It's our health, let's do something about it!!

An AMAZING episode to watch!!!

On a search for the truth!

#4Vohz

It is still incredibly hard for me to type this, but if I don't now, I have no idea when the urge will occur again. I will start out by saying that I am doing this for him, our sweet baby boy Vohz. Unfortunately, he never got the chance to live his life and the one he did experience was full of pain and tests.  This is no life for anyone, especially a child.

So finally here's his story..

April 27, 2013, we found out we were expecting our second child. We were thrilled, which that word has no way to even begin to describe my excitement.

The pregnancy at the time seemed normal other than extreme fatigue on my part. It was totally different than what had occurred with our first. I could barely stay awake most days, my brain was always fogged, and my eyesight was progressively worse than it ever had been before, but it was all chalked up as normal (who knows what normal is anyway).

July 12, 2013, It's a BOY!!!!

August 20, 2013, a day before our 5 year anniversary I went in for a routine checkup.
This would be the last day of happily expecting our (normal) baby.
His heart rate was low 103 and it seemed to be double beating.
The Dr., of course, was concerned and called in others to listen. The consensus was that he had a possible heart defect and would need to be seen by a specialist to know for sure.
Dr's words to me will never leave my head.
She said, "I doubt it's anything serious, he probably won't die".
I remember crying all the way to the elevator to call my husband.

Not sure of any date's after these except at the end. Our life was a whirlwind of specialists trying to figure out what exactly was wrong.

Vohz was later diagnosed (after birth) with aortic coarctation, mild hydrocephalus, agenesis of the corpus callosum, and a Lymphatic system condition that remains undiagnosed and BAFFLED all who came in contact with little boy.

All of these conditions separate could be managed and the person could go on to lead a "normal" healthy, happy life however all of them together spelled disaster.

While still in the womb it was expected of a genetic issue, however, all tests came back negative.

My husband and I, of course, could not stop searching for "what went wrong".
We are healthy!
I avoided and was extra cautious with EVERYTHING.

One Dr mentioned exposure to environmental toxins, and how these can, in fact, cause epigenetic changes within our body.

WHAT!?! Environmental Toxins?? For months, Jason and I lived in a house smack in the middle of FARMLAND. The house had sat vacant for some time and of course, running on none other than well water.  Our older son and I would come out of the house often to watch the crop duster pass over the house and spray the crops...

Funny thing is, in this time Jason and I were very sick. Our stomachs were always upset and we both lost weight. Our son was unable to use the bathroom and was constantly constipated. Then one of our beloved pets became very ill. His limbs would swell with fluid and he had horrible diarrhea. Later it was determined that something had occurred to his Lymphatic system.

Of course, there is never ever one thing that caused it all. Unfortunately, it doesn't work like that. There are several other occurrences throughout our lives when we could have or did come into contact with things that are potential health threats. It is entirely impossible to be able to limit all exposures (what a perfect world that would be) But, I do believe there are steps that we can take to limit exposures to things that are known to cause harm with the human body. This can help to improve the life of not only our families but those around us, this includes plants, animals, and the environment.
